Nigeria Immigration Service Ranks and Salary Structure In 2020

The Nigeria Immigration Service which came into existence on August, 1958. It came to be as a branch from the Nigerian Police.

Nigeria Immigration Service was initially Known as the immigration department with its highest leader known as the chief federal Immigration officer.



Nigerian Immigration Service was established during the tenure of Alhaji Shehu Shagari who was the minister of Internal Affairs, which is now known as ministry of interior as of that time.

Nigeria Immigration Service was set out to effectively handle and relinquish national duties to the benefit of the masses.

They categorically were created to serve these functions;
Ensure and control the number of persons entering and leaving Nigeria.

Issuance of Residence Permits to Foreigners in Nigeria.

Issuance of Travel Documents which includes Nigerian passports to Nigerians residing within and outside Nigeria.

The Nigeria Immigration Service which had its first chief leader as E.H Harrison has always sectioned its pay and allowances according to ranks of its service chiefs, and active recruits.

Nigeria Immigration Service has grown beyond just being an agency but a paramilitary body having its highest leader now known as the Comptroller general and no longer the chief Federal Immigration officer.

The Service operates as a complex government structure with different levels and line-ups.

Most times, entitlements to these ranks come with one’s academic level. As this ranks are also in line with the salary structure of each level.
For example; A University B.Sc holder is expected to earn much higher than a WASSCE holder.

Nevertheless, the salary structure of Nigeria Immigration Service and their provision of allowing secondary school leavers has made its position one of the most sought after government owned jobs ever.

The creation of these departments and units came about in 2017 as the new immigration regulations, considering the challenges the service faced. These challenges includes; the rise in cross-border immigration violations, the need for control of entry and monitoring of migrants with huge respect to transnational crimes.

The National Immigration service which is known for departments or preferably called directorates have them for these functions and divisions.

Human Resources Management Directorate

This Directorate is headed by a Deputy Comptroller General and divided into four (4) Divisions as follows:

Appointment, Promotion and Discipline;
Staff Welfare and Gender;
Training and Staff Development;
General Services.

Finance and Accounts Directorate

The Directorate is headed by a Deputy Comptroller General and divided into three (3) Divisions as follows:

  1. Finance
  2. Budget
  3. Revenue

Planning, Research and Statistics Directorate

The Directorate is headed by a Deputy Comptroller General and divided into three (3) Divisions as follows:

Planning;
Research and Statistics;
ICT.

Passport & Other Travel Documents Directorate
The Directorate is headed by a Deputy Comptroller General and divided into two (2) Divisions as follows:

Passport (Standard);
Diplomatic, Official Passports & Other Travel Documents.

Investigation & Compliance Directorate
The Directorate is headed by a Deputy Comptroller General and divided into three (3) Divisions as follows:

  • Investigation
  • Intelligence / Surveillance
  • Compliance

Border Management Directorate

The Directorate is headed by a Deputy Comptroller General and divided into four (4)

Nigerian Immigration Service Salary

The salary for a newly recruited staff of the Nigerian immigration service is ₦30,000/per month though their are other allowances that comes apart from the official salary. Bringing out the actual amount of money been paid won’t be possible as the government treats those information confidential.
